The discovery of antibiotics in the 20th Century has allowed the treatment of many infections, which has improved the prognoses of patients suffering from bacterial infections. Although antibiotic resistance occurs naturally, overuse and misuse of antibiotics in humans and animals is accelerating the process. Due to the relaxed laws in Egypt antibiotics are sold without prescription, their abuse by the public is very common. The aim of this study is to draw the attention of Egyptian dentists regarding the abuse of antibiotics while clarifying the myths of prescribing antibiotics, to explain theirreality of usagein dentistry and to shift their paradigm regarding the use of antibiotics whendeciding upon the right dose, route, duration and patient.

Materials and Methods:

A cross sectional survey of knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of general dental practitionersregarding antibiotic use was done to identify thecurrent knowledge and to raise the awareness. This is a multidisciplinary work including dentists and paediatricians staff members. We will discuss: Definition, Classification, Indications and Contra-indications, Bacterial species found in dental abscess. Practical application of antibiotic usage whenchoosing the right antibiotic, dosage calculation, root of administration and duration.

Clinical cases with facial cellulitis will be presented before and after dental treatment under a tent of antibiotics.

Statistical analysis of the collected data will be done using the statistical package for Social Science (SPSS windows version 20.0).

A pilot study done on 20 dentists investigating their knowledge about the usage of antibiotics in children showed that there are many misunderstandings towards their proper use.

We noticed that there are many misconceptions about the usage of antibiotics. There are many Egyptians that use antibiotics inappropriately. This needs modification through different strategies. Paediatrician and paediatric dentists should spread the awareness of the proper usage of antibiotics among parents and dentists by using mass media campaigns, to control the problem of antibiotic resistance and to promote for general and oral health of the community.
