Background:

Two prospective clinical, radiographical, and histological studies were conducted to evaluate healing after alveolar ridge preservation technique using different preservation methods, namely collagen membrane alone, tooth graft, beta tri-calcium phosphate, and finally a composite of autogenous tooth graft and beta tri-calcium phosphate.

Methods:

A total of 40 subjects were divided into four groups (n = 40) group 1 included 10 patients undergone single tooth extraction followed by socket fill with collagen membrane alone, group 2 included 10 patients undergone single tooth extraction followed by socket fill with tooth graft material , group 3 included 10 patients undergone single tooth extraction followed by socket fill with beta tri calcium phosphate and finally, group 4 included 10 patients undergone single tooth extraction followed by socket fill with a composite of autogenous tooth graft and beta tri calcium phosphate all covered with collagen membrane.

Comparison was done clinically and radiographically at base line and three months after extraction.

Results:

Bone density increased in beta  tri-calcium phosphate group with a significant difference between both groups. CBCT superimposition revealed that a greater percent decrease in bone height was denoted in autogenous tooth graft group than collagen membrane group without a significant difference between both groups while By histomorphometric analysis a higher mean values of newly formed bone mature bone were found in beta tri-calcium  phosphate graft group with a significant difference between groups. Moreover a higher mean values of newly formed bone mature bone were found in autogenous tooth graft group without a significant difference between groups.

Conclusions:

Extraction sockets grafted with beta tri-calcium phosphate group showed less vertical and horizontal bone changes after three months with a significant difference and extraction sockets grafted with autogenous tooth showed less vertical and horizontal bone changes after three months with no significant difference.
