predictable treatment of peri-implant. mucositis and peri-implantitis
The placement of implants as the optimal choice for replacement of missing teeth is growing exponentially world wide. Unfortunately, with more implants being placed, we are experiencing more and more implant failures. The Journal of the American Academy of Periodontology has reported a 30% incidence of peri-implant mucositis and 16.3% peri-implantitis at an average of 12 years post placement. There are numerous contributing factors and studies have show the microbiota seen in peri-implantitis is the same as shown in periodontitis. It would follow then that treatment protocols successful in treating periodontal disease would also be successful in treating implant disease.
Lasers have been used in treatment with mixed success. Heat producing lasers impart 1200 degrees of heat to the implant and thus are contraindicated! We have, however, been using the ErCr:YSGG laser which is “cold cutting” to successfully treat both periodontal and peri-implant diseases with a great degree of predictability and safety using a time tested protocol for more than 20 years periodontally and with modification more than 15 years on implants. With the advent of radial firing and side firing laser tips, treatment has become even easier and more predictable!
This presentation will explore the causes and successful treatment of peri-implant disease.
